Buffalo City has a vibrant water sport community and is home to numerous clubs and organisations promoting and regulating water sports such as swimming, diving, water polo, rowing and underwater hockey.
Our world class sporting facilities include the Olympic-standard Joan Harrison Pool Complex, named after Joan Harrison Breetzke, the 100m backstroke gold medalist at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.

Buffalo City is the proud host of the Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3® South Africa event. Launched in 2008, this is one of the oldest and toughest of the 70.3 events on the circuit. It attracts over 3,000 entries every year.

Road running is a popular and well-organised sport throughout our Metro, with several excellent running clubs based in the city.
Our region's strong running culture has produced a number of popular annual events which lure competitors from across South Africa, and further afield. These include the always-well-supported Buffs Marathon, Washie100 miler, Legends Marathon and Surfers.

Mountain biking has grown in leaps and bounds to become one of Buffalo City's most popular outdoor activities. The city has developed numerous excellent tracks that invite and beguile beginners and experienced cyclists alike. Whether you want a short, pleasant peddle with the family or a muscle-straining test of endurance, we have a network of tracks in beautiful surroundings.
